Discussion:
Can Pine or Alpine merge address lists?

My favorite private discussion list has just moved to a
new server. This is the second time it's had to. I still
have a laboriously compiled list that we used to
reconstitute it before; the new one isn't so bad, since
some of us have kept hoards, but we do still lack access to
the main list on the previous server.

I can easily make a new hoard, with the take-address
function, of those we have reached today. What I want is
some minimally laborious and tedious way to compare the new
hoard with the old, and send out notices to those we
haven't reached yet.

Can either Alpine or Pine 4.64 help??

Well, this won't help find duplicates, but in 5 seconds of playing (I'm not
trying to be snotty), I found that I can : to select items in an address
book, and 'apply save' them to another address book.

I didn't continue with the function, but it looks like it would do what I would
expect (copy the address book entries from one address book to another).

You can also export them to a file.. So presumably you could export
multiple address books to files, merge them and remove duplicates...
then I'm not sure how to get them back in, since there seems to be no
import function.. presumably you could just replace your .addressbook file
while alpine wasn't running.

I wouldn't've thought you were -- just noticed that you know how
to create a new addressbook, and I don't have a clue even to find out how.

Well, to create a new addressbook, I just went into the addressbook
page, looked at the menu at the bottom of the screen (for me, I have to hit ?
first, since it's not displayed by default).. I see no 'A'dd command.

So I go to Setup and see that there's an AddressBook subcommand.

Right. Fwiw, I've also had enough exchanges with you, here and
elsewhere, so that if the thought had occurred to me, I'd've dismissed it
out of hand.

Sure enough! My fingers are so accustomed to do M > S >C (or in
great need, to edit .pinerc in my shell) that I don't suppose I look
below the first page of Setup as often as every other year.

The original problem is since solved, by other means, or seems
so; but next time, I'll try it that way. Many thanks!

Jeepers, there's nothing to making an addressbook if you know how.
Thanks for the refresher below.

I had been fiddling with this a while back. I've had lists over the
years (been using Pine since about '95) and then forget.

With the current technology, I'd like to be able to grab a csv file off of
Gmail and put it in Alpine for safekeeping as backup. Gamilallows me to
hand off the list to other group members regardless of OS.

Does the file list need any manipulation to run as an addressbook in
Alpine?
