Pine hangs when I open unable to open inbox

Whenever I ope pine it gives me an "Opening Inbox" message and just hangs.
I have tried renaming my /var/spool/mail/<user> file as suggested by some of
the hits in my google search, and trying again but I still get the same
error.
Has anyone else experienced this problem before? Help much appreciated.

Check the size of your mailbox. Maybe it grew to an extreme size that
takes long for Pine to parse.
